How Doing Nothing Can Be Productive

ree

This past month, I’ve started taking more time on the weekends to simply rest. No planning, no errands—just me and some quiet time.

At first, I felt a little guilty for slowing down, but now I can honestly say I feel more energized, focused, and just…lighter.

I’m not talking about doing absolutely nothing all weekend. Instead, I carve out a chunk of time to just chill

I’ve had to let go of the mindset that if I’m not busy, I’m not making progress. I’m one of those women who struggles to rest—raise your hand if you’re with me!

Over the past few weekends, I’ve taken time to read my book club book, binge-watch some Gilmore Girls, have coffee with a friend, and even chat with my daughter for a couple of hours.

All of these moments left me feeling replenished, rested, and connected. Because I have a hard time shutting off my brain, I’ve had to find activities that help me slow down. I’ve also taken long walks, spent time at the beach, and practiced meditation.

And the surprising part? I was able to tackle all my “gotta do” tasks with a clearer, more relaxed mind—and found myself even more productive than if I hadn’t taken the time to rest.

Why Rest Matters

1. Rest boosts energy and focus Your body and brain recover when we allow downtime. Quality rest helps reduce stress hormones, improves mental clarity, and gives you the energy you need to tackle your week.

2. Rest supports long-term health goals Rest affects everything from weight management to mood and metabolism. Taking time to pause isn’t wasted—it’s a key part of staying healthy. “Not doing” is actually productive for your body and mind.

3. Simple ways to rest without guilt Here are some of my go-to downtime activities:

  • Read before getting out of bed in the morning

  • Sit in a sunny spot and meditate

  • Take a long walk—no counting steps!

  • Watch the sunset

  • Binge-watch a favorite show curled up in a blanket

  • Drive and listen to music

  • Make homemade hot chocolate and chat on the phone with a friend

Taking time to rest isn’t lazy—it’s smart. Try carving out just one hour this weekend to truly do nothing, and notice how your body and mind thank you.
