How to Prioritize Self-Care When You Have No Time

Updated: Nov 8, 2024

Let’s face it, for busy women in midlife, juggling work, family, and countless responsibilities, self-care can feel like an afterthought. But here’s the thing—self-care doesn’t always mean scheduling a day at the spa (though that would be nice!). Often, it’s the little things we do consistently that keep us balanced and thriving. You might be asking:

- “What exactly is self-care?”

- “Isn’t it selfish to focus on myself?”

- “How can I even fit self-care into my crazy schedule?”

Let’s dive into each of these questions.

What is self-care, anyway?

Self-care is simply the practice of doing things that preserve or improve your health. It’s about making choices that support your well-being. Whether it’s taking steps to maintain the good health you already have or working on areas that need improvement, self-care is about being proactive with your health—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Isn’t self-care selfish?

Actually, no. It’s quite the opposite! Think about all the people who depend on you—your family, friends, coworkers, or community members. Taking care of yourself isn’t just about you; it’s about being your best for those around you. Want to fully enjoy life’s adventures, vacations, or even simple everyday moments with loved ones? You need to be healthy to do that. Self-care helps you show up fully for others, and that’s far from selfish.

How do I find time for self-care?

Instead of asking, "How will I find time for self-care?" maybe a better question is, "Can I afford not to?" Neglecting your health often leads to burnout, stress, and even illness, making it harder to show up for the people and things you care about. By making time for small acts of self-care, you’re investing in your long-term health and happiness.

3 Simple Ways to Start Prioritizing Self-Care Today:

1. Hydrate

Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. Staying hydrated is one of the simplest things you can do to support your body. If plain water doesn’t excite you, jazz it up with lemon, lime, or a splash of fruit. Grab yourself a beautiful cup or bottle that makes drinking water feel special. I personally love sipping my water from a wine goblet—makes the day feel a bit more luxurious!

2. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is crucial for healing, resting, and recharging. Without enough quality sleep, our bodies can’t function at their best. Aim for 7-9 hours a night, and create a calming bedtime routine. Whether it’s dimming the lights, turning off screens, or reading a good book, these small rituals help signal your body that it’s time to wind down.

3. Move Daily

Daily movement is essential for overall health. No, this doesn’t mean pacing the aisles at the grocery store or cleaning the house. Get outside for a walk, soak up some fresh air and sunlight, or, if you’re indoors, find space to stretch, lift light weights, or even do a few flights of stairs. Just 10-15 minutes of intentional movement can make a huge difference.

The truth is, you don’t need elaborate retreats or expensive treatments to start taking care of yourself. Begin with these simple steps to nurture your mind, body, and spirit—because you’re worth it!
