How to Reset Your Routine Before the Holidays Begin: Self-Care Tips to Reduce Stress and Find Joy

ree

Ever find yourself wondering, “How did I make it through another holiday season?” Some years it feels effortless, and other times you’re hanging on by the skin of your teeth.

The difference? How you take care of yourself.

When you’re running on empty, even the smallest tasks feel heavy. But when you prioritize your health, rest, and routines — the holidays become smoother and more joyful.

And yes, October might seem early to start talking about the holidays — but since Halloween decorations hit the shelves in July, why not get a head start on creating a calmer season?

1. Start with Simple Self-Care Habits

If you want to reduce holiday stress, begin with a few daily or weekly self-care habits that support your body and mind. (Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup!)

Try:

  • Going to bed at a consistent time

  • Limiting sugar and processed foods

  • Scheduling a relaxing massage or yoga class

  • Taking 15 minutes of quiet time for yourself each day — even if it means locking the bathroom door for peace and quiet

These consistent practices can help stabilize your energy and mood before the holiday rush begins.

2. Reduce Overwhelm by Lightening Your Load

Feeling overwhelmed? I often ask my clients to consider three powerful questions:

What can you automate, delegate, or eliminate?

Maybe it’s automating bill payments, delegating grocery shopping, or saying “no” to one extra holiday event. Simplifying where you can makes space for what truly matters — your peace of mind.

3. Reconnect with What Brings You Joy

It’s easy to get caught up in doing all the things and forget why we celebrate in the first place.

When my kids were little, we made homemade ornaments, baked cookies, and drank hot chocolate together. I was working full-time and raising kids, but I still found small moments of joy that made the holidays special.

Years later, I don’t remember the gifts — I remember the laughter, the togetherness, and the smells of cinnamon and chocolate.

Take a moment to ask yourself: What traditions or moments bring me joy? How can I make space for those again?

4. Plan Ahead for a Calmer Holiday Season

Think about what usually causes you stress — travel, family dynamics, last-minute shopping — and create a plan now to prevent those triggers from taking over.

A little preparation goes a long way in helping you stay grounded, glowing, and joyful through the season.
