When Life Comes Full Circle: Lessons from the Nursing Home

ree

This week, I had a unique opportunity to volunteer at a local nursing home. I met some incredible residents, their loving family members, and heard stories that made me laugh, cry, and reflect. It reminded me how life truly comes full circle.

I saw adult children caring for their aging parents the same way a parent cares for a young child—helping them move, carrying their belongings, serving them meals. I saw residents being gently spoken to, lovingly supported, and tenderly cared for.

It warmed my heart… and it made me think.

My reason for being there was to share a presentation on Food and Mood—specifically, how food choices impact our physical and emotional health. My friend, an art therapist, joined me to guide residents and families in creating a beautiful “Memory Box” art project. It was such a touching way for families to connect.

As I observed, I saw a wide range of health among the participants: a vibrant 94-year-old with full mental clarity and energy, others with cognitive decline, and one recovering from both a stroke and cancer. I asked one of the staff members if dietary changes were ever part of their chronic disease management. Her response?

“We really can’t do anything like that due to cost.”

Challenge accepted.

Can we eat an anti-inflammatory diet without breaking the bank? I believe the answer is yes. And this is a conversation I intend to keep having—especially for the sake of our aging population.

In the meantime, here are 4 budget-friendly tips you can start with now to support your long-term health—whether you’re in your 40s or your 80s:

1. Healthy Fats

Think: avocados, olives, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. These nourish your brain and reduce inflammation.

2. Fiber

Load up on fruits and vegetables! They support digestion, blood sugar balance, and heart health.

3. Protein

Choose a mix of animal and plant-based proteins like high-quality beef, chicken, seafood, beans, and legumes.

4. Avoid Highly Processed Foods

If it has a label, aim for five or fewer ingredients—and make sure they’re ones you recognize!

Spending time with these residents gave me fresh perspective, a renewed sense of purpose, and a few new friends. I can’t wait to go back.

Until then, take a look at what’s in your grocery cart and make one or two small shifts that your future self will thank you for.
