How Do You Eat an Elephant? One Bite at a Time!

“How do you eat an elephant?” My clients hear me say this all the time. The answer?
One bite at a time!
You don’t have to do all the things at once. Start small. Go for the low-hanging fruit. Because if you try to change your sleep schedule, start a brand-new intense workout routine, cut sugar, and meditate for 20 minutes a day—when you’ve done none of that before—you’ll burn out fast and end up binge-watching Netflix with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.
The key? Start slow. Here are 10 simple ideas I give clients just starting out:
Go to bed 30 minutes earlier
Take a 10-minute walk at lunch
Get salad dressing on the side (bonus points: dip your fork instead of pouring)
Drink 8 oz of water before coffee
Add one extra serving of vegetables to your day
Swap soda for sparkling water
Stretch for 5 minutes before bed
Keep a gratitude list
Eat without your phone or TV once a day
Swap white bread for whole grain
Pick one thing you know you can do.
Here’s my own example: I’m working on my bedtime routine. In my dream world, I’d start winding down at 8 p.m., take a candlelit bath, journal, meditate, and then read until I drift off. Reality? I’m simply shutting off my phone at 8. Not glamorous—but it’s a start.
